Pondering the importance of our existence

On Saturday night, I watched a special on the History Channel entitled “Life After Humans”. It proposed theories as to what would happen to man-made objects 25 years to 10,000 years after humans had vanished from the Earth (although due to what circumstances, I’m not sure – I missed the first ten minutes or so).

Most of the program dealt with structures like skyscrapers and suspension bridges, but it also projected the demise of things like automobiles and subway tunnels. The graphics were eerily realistic and even just after 25 years of neglect showed New York City as an urban jungle, overgrown with vegetation and decay.

One of the last facts the the show offered was this: if the lifetime of the Earth (roughly 4 billion years) was compressed into one day (24 hours), human existence so far would have elapsed 30 seconds.

That is quite incredible, don’t you think?
